Care units for paediatric cardiac medicine at the DHZC

The Departments of Congenital Heart Defects - Paediatric Cardiology and Paediatric Cardiac Surgery at the DHZC together form one of the world's largest and most important centres for paediatric cardiac medicine. Our range of services includes all interventional and surgical corrections of congenital heart defects from newborns to adulthood, the best possible treatment of all acquired heart diseases in children and the world's largest paediatric artificial heart programme.

The nursing tasks on the intensive care unit WDA1i and the wards WD4 and W24i, which together with the outpatient admission department form an "organisational unit for congenital heart defects", are correspondingly specialised and demanding.

Ward WDA1i

The ward has twelve ventilation places. The nursing team is made up of healthcare and nursing staff as well as healthcare and paediatric nurses. The team also includes a hygiene officer, an equipment officer and two practice instructors to organise and coordinate the induction of new colleagues.

All employees can choose from an extensive range of other in-house training courses. The DHZC also offers specialist training in paediatric intensive care and regularly trains colleagues.

The ward has flexible visiting hours and psychological/psychological counselling for parents. The nursing team receives additional support from a ward assistant.

One carer looks after up to two patients around the clock.

Ward W24i

Ward W24i is located on the ground floor of Mittelallee 8. The paediatric cardiology and paediatric monitoring ward has 16 beds. All beds are equipped with extensive, centrally monitored monitors. There is the option of mobile telemetric ECG monitoring.

Patients are accommodated in single or twin rooms. An accompanying parent can always stay overnight (rooming-in).

The core task of the ward is the care of paediatric cardiology patients of all age groups - including adults with congenital heart defects - by a specialised medical and nursing team.

Ward WD4i

The WD4i nursing ward has 24 beds. The special thing about WD4i is that we offer a wide range of different medical care here.

We care for patients after a cardiac catheterisation, accompany children after an artificial heart implantation, sometimes for a longer period as inpatients, and care for patients before and after their operation. Post-operative patients are transferred to WD4 after the paediatric intensive care unit and continue to require very intensive medical monitoring and care (IMC). In addition, patients who come for outpatient examinations such as MRI, CT, cardioversion, TEE under sedation and for post-inpatient follow-up care are also cared for

During the day, one carer looks after up to four patients on ward WD4i, and up to six patients at night.
