Inpatient treatment
Every intervention requires a highly professional team that works together optimally. The nursing staff make a significant contribution to this, whether in the operating theatre or in the intensive care unit. The nursing wards are assigned to our clinics to ensure seamless care for all patients. Each patient is treated individually at the highest level and with great care and attention. The nursing staff at the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery are committed to this every day. With the utmost care, experience and humanity.
Our stations
The WDH1 care ward has 21 patient beds and an additional admissions room. More than 20 nurses care for the patients in a three-shift system. This ward primarily cares for patients who have received a ventricular assist device (VAD). Here, they and their relatives are trained in how to use the systems, mainly with regard to changing the dressing at the exit point of the power cable and taking anticoagulant medication. VAD patients are also treated as inpatients at WDH1 in the event of complications that arise later and for preparation for surgery.
The so-called ‘assist team’, consisting of doctors and nurses, organises and accompanies the patients' regular outpatient appointments. They also change the dressings of inpatients and serve as the link between outpatient and inpatient care. Furthermore, patients on the WDH1 ward are also prepared for valve, bypass and vascular surgery or for transplantation. Psychosocial care during the inpatient stay and support at home by nursing staff is organised by the Department of Psychosomatics and Social Services. Optimal nutritional care is provided by trained dieticians.
Ward WD2 is one of the peripheral wards of DHZC, responsible for pre- and postoperative patient care. It has 41 beds and is equipped with a possible VIP area. Currently, over 50 employees work in a three-shift system on this ward.
Patients are admitted and prepared here before surgery, and usually transferred back from the intensive care unit one or two days after surgery. This is followed by targeted care and mobilisation with a view to an early transfer to the Paulinen Hospital, which usually provides further care. From there, patients are then discharged home or to a suitable rehabilitation facility.
Ward WD3 is the transplant and heart failure ward at DHZC. It has twelve single rooms and an admissions room. Each bed is equipped with a monitoring system, infusion pumps and a ventilator connection for intensive care. Each room has a state-of-the-art lighting system that imitates the day and night rhythm.
After the intensive care phase, patients who have recently had heart and lung transplants are cared for on this ward until the start of their rehabilitation phase. The WD3 team also cares for long-term transplant patients who need to be admitted for routine check-ups, infection treatments or rejection treatments. In addition, patients are admitted to WD3 as part of listing examinations for a transplant.

The nursing team at WD1i consists of more than 100 employees who care for the patients in three shifts. The ward has two monitoring rooms, each with six places, three two-bed rooms and eight single rooms. The WD2i intensive care unit has 18 beds and almost 80 employees and was extensively renovated and modernised in 2017.

Patients are transferred to W1i directly after surgery; after extubation, they are transferred to the W2i recovery ward, where they are closely monitored. One focus is on the care of patients with extracorporeal procedures such as ECMO systems and Impella pumps.
Patients who have undergone heart valve interventions are also cared for on the W2i ward. These patients are treated by our interdisciplinary heart teams as part of the DHZC's ‘Structural Heart Interventions Program’ (SHIP).
