Department of Congenital Heart Disease - Pediatric Cardiology
A highly specialised team at the Department of Congenital Heart Disease - Pediatric Cardiology at the Virchow-Klinikum campus in Berlin has been treating patients with congenital heart defects of all ages for more than 35 years. In addition to standardised surgical and interventional correction options, we offer tailored individual treatment solutions, especially for patients with highly complicated heart defects. We have a special intensive care ward and an intermediate monitoring ward, a special outpatient clinic for congenital heart defects and a centre of excellence for adults with congenital heart defects.
As part of Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the Department of Congenital Heart Disease - Pediatric Cardiology is responsible for research and teaching in addition to patient care.
Find out more about the services of the clinic, the departments and their specialisations on the following pages. Parents and patients can also find further information and treatment options here.
With our treatment programmes for patients with congenital heart defects and acquired diseases of the cardiovascular system in children, we occupy a leading position in Europe. Our primary goal is to provide the best possible treatment at the highest level for the patients entrusted to us.

Our clinic at a glance
Every procedure requires a highly professional team that works together optimally. The nursing staff make a significant contribution here, whether in the operating theatre or on the intensive care ward.
An outpatient clinic is often the first point of contact for patients who are suddenly confronted with the diagnosis of a heart defect.

Specialised care
The Departments of Paediatric Cardiology and Paediatric Cardiac Surgery at the DHZC together form one of the world's largest and most important centres for paediatric cardiac medicine. The nursing tasks on the intensive care unit WDA1i and the wards WD4 and W24i, which together with the outpatient admission department form an "organisational unit for congenital heart defects", are correspondingly specialised and demanding.

Psychocardiology
At the DHZC, we do not look at heart disease in isolation, but holistically: in addition to the physical well-being of our patients, we always keep their mental well-being in mind. Doctors, psychologists and nursing staff work closely together in the DHZC psychocardiology department. Our team cares for patients who are treated as inpatients or outpatients at the DHZC. Patients at our Clinic for Congenital Heart Defects are also closely supported. This naturally includes their parents and relatives.
