Close support: this is how nursing specialists are trained at the DHZC
Whether you are joining us as a newly qualified nurse or are an experienced nurse coming to join our team, we want to make your induction period as pleasant and effective as possible.
It is particularly important to us that nobody should feel anxious about their new job and all the challenges it brings. We know that providing the best cardiac care requires the best nursing care.
You are the future of nursing at the DHZC. That's why we take a lot of time to familiarise you with your new role and are always available to answer your questions afterwards.
Familiarisation with the DHZC
Welcome to the team! During their first few days at work, we introduce all new employees at the DHZC to our clinic and the departments. They receive detailed training from our IT specialists in our IT systems and are instructed in the various regulations, for example on hygiene or data protection and occupational safety.
We have created a detailed induction programme for each ward, complete with a comprehensive induction manual that every newly hired nurse at DHZC receives. It covers rules, contact persons and procedures, checklists, information on medical conditions, medications, the equipment we use and much more: an indispensable guide in (almost) every professional situation!
Induction training on our wards
The induction training period on the nursing wards of the DHZC is six to eight weeks. New employees receive at least eight weeks of induction training on our intensive care wards.

This is how the induction programme works
We want you to feel truly confident by the end of the induction period. That's why new employees are assigned to a colleague throughout the entire induction period and do not work alone at the patient's bedside during this time.
During the induction period, at least three meetings take place with the management and the trainers. The initial meeting, in which the induction process is discussed, takes place within the first week. After three to four weeks, we hold an interim meeting and, at the end of the induction period, the final meeting together with the head of the department, in which the induction is evaluated. In addition, further informal meetings are possible at any time. Of course, you can always turn to your colleagues with questions, even after the induction.
Further special features
In addition to the induction, the practical instructors organise a theory day to help you discuss specific questions outside of routine work. After about two to four months at DHZC, new nursing staff are also accompanied by the practical instructors in a mentoring day on the ward. Together with you, we evaluate the day and check where you stand and in which areas you might need additional support.
New colleagues in our peripheral care units have the opportunity to sit in on the operating theatre or cardiac catheterisation service for a day to get to know the processes in these areas.
In the intensive care unit, you will receive specialised training from our specialists in respiratory therapy and wound management. New employees on the intensive care wards also receive interdisciplinary training, with doctors accompanying new nursing staff on the ward during their induction period.
Familiarisation with the paediatric intensive care unit
A few days old, with severe congenital heart defects, immediately after hours of highly complex heart surgery: paediatric intensive care at the DHZC, a world-leading paediatric heart centre, places the highest demands on nurses. We have therefore developed a special induction programme for paediatric intensive care that gently introduces you to this area. The concept is modular, so it includes individual blocks of theory and practice that can be put together individually depending on your previous knowledge.
