Transplantation at the DHZC

We have been performing heart, lung and combined heart-lung transplants at the German Heart Center of the Charité (DHZC) for almost 40 years. This has resulted in one of the largest and most successful transplant programs in Germany. We are one of the leading centers for heart and lung transplants in Germany. In total, more than 3,000 transplants have been performed at the DHZC since the start of the program. In our Transplant Outpatient Clinic we currently care for around 900 transplanted patients. 

In 2025, a total of 64 transplants were performed at the DHZC. We transplanted 35 hearts and 26 lungs, including one single-lung transplant. Our surgical teams also performed three heart-lung transplants.

A total of 350 heart transplants were performed throughout Germany in 2025 (source: German Organ Transplantation Foundation DSO). 

We care for patients with severe heart or lung diseases from all over Germany. Our experienced, interdisciplinary team specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of so-called terminal heart and lung diseases that require a transplant. Cardiologists, pulmonologists and cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons work hand in hand with nursing staff, nutritionists and psychologists to ensure that patients receive individualized care.
