Normal care wards at the DHZC
The DHZC has standard care wards at the Charité campuses Virchow-Klinikum, Charité Mitte and Benjamin Franklin. Due to the high level of specialisation, working on these wards places high demands on the knowledge and skills of the nursing staff. Here is an overview of our wards and their specialisations.

Ward W3
Ward W3 has 32 beds and is located in Mittelallee 2 on the 2nd floor. The nursing team cares for patients before and after cardiac interventions such as electrocardioversions or operations, including minimally invasive aortic valve operations (TAVI), and ensures continuous cardiovascular monitoring. Patients are also treated here after heart valve interventions, which in the „Structural Heart Interventions Program“ (SHIP) of the DHZC are treated by our interdisciplinary heart teams.
Ward W3 specialises in the treatment of coronary heart disease, heart valve insufficiency, aortic dissections, high blood pressure and cardiac arrhythmia.

Stations W44 and W45
The telemetry wards W44 and W45 are located in Mittelallee 11 on the 2nd floor. The W44 has 20 beds, the W45 has 25 cardiological and 6 nephrological beds.
Patients with the entire spectrum of cardiovascular diseases are diagnosed and treated here. Both wards are equipped with telemetric monitoring, and ward W44 also has ten monitor monitoring beds.
Interprofessional teamwork plays a major role on both wards, i.e. cooperation between nursing staff and other professional groups such as doctors, patient managers, physiotherapists and service staff. In addition, further and advanced training on topics such as shift coordination, de-escalation management, practical guidance, wound or nutrition management are an important and popular offer for the nursing staff on the wards.
On ward W44, one carer looks after up to seven patients during the day and up to 10 patients at night. On ward W45, one carer is responsible for up to 15 patients at night.

Ward WDH1
Ward WDH1 cares for patients with a mechanical ventricular assist device (VAD).
It has 23 patient beds. The range of tasks on ward WDH1 mainly includes the post-operative care of patients with a mechanical ventricular assist device after the intensive care phase until they are transferred to a rehabilitation clinic.
The team on ward WDH1 also cares for patients undergoing bypass, heart valve and vascular surgery preoperatively and for patients following a heart and/or lung transplant in the long term.
On WDH1, one carer looks after up to six patients during the day, with a ratio of 1:11 at night.

Ward WD2
WD2 is located on the 2nd floor of the building at Augustenburger Platz. In addition to the admission of cardiac surgery patients, post-operative care also takes place here as soon as treatment in the intensive care unit has been completed. After the operation, patients are monitored here 24 hours a day and can recover from the operation at their own pace.
They are supported by over 60 employees working in a 3-shift system. On WD2, one carer looks after up to six patients during the day and up to eleven patients at night.

Ward WD8
The DHZC's elective ward WD8 is located in the Paulinenkrankenhaus, our cooperation partner, due to limited room capacity. On the 6th floor of the Paulinenkrankenhaus, ward WD8 has 15 single rooms including two suites. During the day, the nursing ratio is one carer to seven patients in the early shift, and up to eight patients in the late shift; at night, one carer looks after up to eleven patients.
After an acute phase of illness and intensive medical care, further inpatient treatment takes place on ward WD8. Post-operative patients are primarily cared for here, but also patients with terminal heart failure who have received a mechanical heart support pump and/or are waiting for a heart transplant or have already received a transplant. From here, patients are discharged home or transferred to a suitable rehabilitation centre.

Wards S30A, S30B and S36A
The wards of the German Heart Centre of the Charité have 48 beds on the Benjamin Franklin Campus, 14 of which belong to the optional services ward S30B.
Patients are treated here before and after various cardiac procedures such as cardiac catheterisation, implantation of pacemakers and defibrillators, mitral clipping and PFO closure.
Patients with cardiac arrhythmia and heart failure are mainly cared for on cardiology ward 30A. Patients with complex coronary heart disease (CHD), angiological diseases and heart valve diseases are treated on cardiology ward 36A. Ward 30B is the elective ward at the CBF.

Ward M111 A/B
Ward M111 A/B is located on the 11th floor of Luisenstrasse 64 (B side) and has a total of 40 beds.
Patients are cared for here before and after various cardiac procedures such as cardiac catheterisation, implantation of pacemakers and defibrillators, mitral clipping and PFO closure. The team is particularly specialised in special care for cardiac arrhythmia, angina pectoris, coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, heart failure, heart valve disease, hypertension, pericardial effusion, peri-, myo- and endocarditis.
