About the DHZC

The Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité (DHZC) is a specialist clinic for cardiovascular diseases. It was created at the beginning of 2023 through the merger of the cardiac medical facilities of the Deutsches Herzzentrum Berlin and Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin. As a strategically and operationally independent unit, it is one of the leading heart centres in Europe.

The DHZC is located at Charité's three clinical campuses at Campus Virchow-Klinikum, Campus Charité Mitte and Campus Benjamin Franklin. It comprises a total of seven departments and one institute.

With 474 beds, around 20,000 inpatients per year and 2,100 employees, the DHZC is one of the largest heart centres in Europe. In interdisciplinary and interprofessional, highly specialised teams, we treat patients of all ages with cardiovascular diseases of all degrees of severity - around the clock.

We operate the world's largest artificial heart programme in terms of case numbers and are one of the leading German centres for heart and lung transplantation. The Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité is also an international leader in the treatment of complex congenital heart defects, particularly in newborns and infants. In the catheter-based treatment of heart valve diseases, we combine our surgical and cardiological expertise in interdisciplinary heart teams.

We are committed to the continuous progress of cardiovascular medicine through intensive research and teaching.

For every heartbeat.

Strategic and operational autonomy

As a joint centre of the Charité and the DHZB Foundation, the DHZC, as an organisational unit of the Charité, has a large degree of strategic and operational autonomy. It has a DHZC Divisional managers and a DHZC Board of Directors.

The divisional board manages the DHZC. Its members are the medical director of the DHZC Prof. Dr. Volkmar Falk (chair), the deputy medical director Prof. Dr. Ulf Landmesser, the commercial director Dr. Rolf Zettl, the chief integration officer Prof. Dr. med. Gerhard Hindricks and the nursing director Sebastian Dienst.

The Board of Administration, which is equally represented, supervises the management of the divisional board. It includes the Chairman of the Board of the Charité Prof. Dr. Heyo K. Kroemer (Chair) and the Chairman of the Board of the DHZB Foundation Prof. Dr. Hans Maier, as well as two further representatives of each institution.
