Friede Springer - Cardiovascular Prevention Centre

Cardiovascular diseases are the most common cause of death in Germany. The risk factors for this are diverse, develop slowly and often go unnoticed for decades until they lead to a heart attack, stroke or impairing health.
The aim of the Friede Springer - Cardiovascular Prevention Centre is to conduct further research into cardiovascular diseases, identify individual risks at an early stage and respond to them preventively. This new research and prevention centre is being built on the Benjamin Franklin Campus of Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Over the next few years, the Friede Springer Foundation will fund the centre with up to 70 million euros.

Personalised prevention strategies

A heart attack is often the first sign of long-standing arteriosclerosis of the coronary arteries and is frequently only treated symptomatically without eliminating the cause. A paradigm shift towards prevention and early treatment is needed to combat cardiovascular disease more effectively, with new pharmacological approaches and comprehensive risk assessments playing a role. The long-term effectiveness of these measures depends heavily on patient adherence, where education, motivation and comprehensive support are crucial.

Digital health technology

Digital health technologies, ranging from smartwatches to networked blood pressure monitors, support health monitoring and interventions. At the Friede Springer Cardiovascular Prevention Centre, we use and further develop these technologies to improve the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, supported by machine learning for risk assessment. Despite their potential, many applications have not yet been fully validated scientifically, which emphasises the need for further research.
