Hygiene management at the DHZC

In contrast to healthy people, patients in hospital are at increased risk from infections. The task of the hygiene team at the DHZC is therefore to prevent any transmission of pathogens in the clinic as far as possible.

As a high-performance medical center, we have an active hygiene management system. This includes, if necessary, placing affected patients in a single room and barrier measures such as gown care, face masks and gloves. The measures vary depending on the type of bacteria and the affected ward.

We will, of course, discuss all necessary measures with the affected patient. The treating physician will also be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Structure of hygiene management

The hygiene team is available to assist all departments of the German Heart Center at the Charité. It is part of the Institute of Hygiene and Environmental Medicine at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. The institute is responsible for preventing infection in patients at the Charité and is also active in research. Further information about the institute can be found at https://hygiene.charite.de/.

Jeanina Kluge, a specialist nurse in hospital hygiene at the Institute for Hygiene and Environmental Medicine, is responsible for implementing hygiene measures at the DHZC.

Interdisciplinary collaboration

Each department has doctors who are responsible for hygiene and monitor the hygiene regulations and measures for the medical field. Since 2008, there have also been so-called LINK nurses, who – in coordination with the hygiene team – support the creation and implementation of hygiene-relevant standards on the nursing side. The hygiene team works together with the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the Regional Office for Health and Social Affairs (LAGeSo) and the Regional Office for Occupational Safety and Technical Security (LAGetSi).
