Research
For the further development of cardiac medicine
Our primary goal is to continuously improve the treatment options for our patients at a high level. Without research and science, there would be no further development in medicine. The Clinic for Congenital Heart Defects - Paediatric Cardiology takes up this challenge within the framework of numerous scientific research projects. We have been working closely with the Competence Network for Congenital Heart Defects since 2003. Our employees are involved in many of the competence network's studies.
For example, intensive research is being conducted in the field of congenital heart defects in adulthood (EMAH). Charité's German Heart Institute is a leading participant in numerous EMAH research projects - with the aim of continuously optimising the quality of care for EMAH patients. The treatment of pulmonary hypertension, special cardiac catheter techniques and the provision of three-chamber pacemakers are examples of projects at our clinic.

Teaching
The Department of Congenital Heart Defects - Paediatric Cardiology offers bedside teaching, block practicals and lectures on paediatric cardiology topics as part of the model study programme of the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the HU Berlin. We are particularly interested in our own compulsory elective module in paediatric cardiology: a paediatric cardiology module for paediatrics and paediatric cardiology in the reform course.
We also offer clinical traineeships and supervise paediatric elective students during their practical year (PJ).

National quality assurance in the treatment of congenital heart defects
We contribute our interventional services to the national database of the Kompetenznetzes Angeborene Herzfehler for quality assurance and ask patients and parents for their written consent as part of the informative discussions on cardiac catheterisation examinations.
The National Quality Assurance Programme for Congenital Heart Defects is supported by the Deutschen Gesellschaft für Thorax-, Herz- und Gefäßchirurgie e. V. and ther Deutschen Gesellschaft für Pädiatrische Kardiologie.
