Fellowships

The Clinic for Cardioanaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine offers various fellowship programmes. In addition to teaching specialised cardioanaesthesiological and/or intensive care medical skills, the aim is to acquire in-depth expertise in transthoracic and/or transoesophageal echocardiography.

Adult cardioanaesthesiology is dedicated to the perioperative care of patients undergoing cardiac, vascular and intrathoracic surgery, as well as interventional and diagnostic cardiovascular procedures.

The majority of clinical training includes, depending on the module, the care of patients in the operating theatre, at other anaesthesia workstations including the Peri Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), and in the intensive care unit. At the Charité's German Heart Centre, more than 7,200 anaesthesia procedures are performed each year on patients requiring surgery across the entire spectrum of adult cardiac surgery and interventional cardiology. For intensive care, three wards with a total of 59 beds are available for adults.

Classic fellowship in cardioanaesthesiology and intensive care medicine

The modular fellowship in cardioanaesthesia and intensive care medicine includes a one-year module in intensive care medicine and a one-year module in cardioanaesthesia in the classic path. However, the intensive care module, with the aim of acquiring additional training in intensive care medicine, is also available separately as a one- or two-year fellowship.

Fellowship Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS)

The two-year fellowship offers medical specialists the opportunity to acquire the skills, theoretical knowledge and practical application of MCS therapy through a structured training programme, in order to be able to provide intensive care to patients independently and autonomously with short- and long-term support systems.

Echocardiography courses

Our modular course in perioperative echocardiography is aimed at anyone interested in this imaging technique and covers all examination modalities for cardiac surgery and catheter-based interventions. Courses in transesophageal echocardiography have been offered at the German Heart Institute Berlin since 1999 and are continuously developed based on participant evaluations.

The courses are currently divided into PFE 1&2 (basic and advanced transthoracic echocardiography) and PFE 3&4 (basic and advanced transesophageal echocardiography). We use various simulators with detailed imaging of cardiac morphology and function in all courses. Simulation methods significantly facilitate the learning of practical skills. In addition, clinical findings are jointly developed using evaluation software.

The importance, complexity and specialisation of perioperative echocardiography has increased significantly in recent years. In terms of content, the modules cover the entire spectrum, including 3D echocardiography, quantitative echocardiography, speckle tracking and echocardiography for catheter-based interventions.
The value of transthoracic echocardiography in interventional procedures under local anaesthesia, in patients in the PACU and in the intensive care unit has also increased steadily in importance. The practical exercises for emergency echocardiography and advanced diagnostics are first performed on simulators and then on test subjects.

All modules comply with the guidelines of the DGAI and are certified by the DGAI and the Berlin Medical Association.
