At the Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité, we offer numerous training and continuing education opportunities for physicians and nursing staff. We summarise the individual offers for you here. On these pages, you will also find all the facts about sitting in on consultations at the DHZC and about our CMR Academy.

Specialised heart failure assistance

The specialised heart failure assistant training programme was developed in collaboration with the German Cardiac Society to ensure the best possible coordinated care for patients with chronic heart failure.

Echo courses (DGAI)

As an integral component of modern therapeutic strategies, perioperative echocardiography (PFE) improves the quality of care for patients – and thus significantly increases their safety. At the DHZB Academy, those interested learn how to perform the imaging procedure in the best possible way. The training covers all examination modalities for cardiac surgery and
The modules correspond to the new DGAI guidelines and are certified by the DGAI and the Berlin Medical Association.

Echo courses (DEGUM)

The courses of the Echocardiography Academy are hosted by senior physicians from the DHZC. The speakers have many years of experience and expertise in the field of echocardiography as well as in other diverse areas of focus and are authors of numerous scientific publications and textbook articles on the subject.

All courses comply with the DEGUM guidelines and the KBV ultrasound agreements. They are certified by the DEGUM and registered with the Berlin Medical Association.

Interdisciplinary training for guiding therapy for structural heart disease

In recent years, echocardiographic monitoring of procedures for structural heart disease, known as “guiding,” has established itself as the fourth pillar of cardiac ultrasound alongside regular transthoracic, transesophageal, and stress echocardiography.

Modular Fellowship in Cardi anaesthesia and Intensive care

Cardioanaesthesiology and intensive care medicine is dedicated to the pre-, intra- and postoperative care of patients undergoing cardiac, vascular and intrathoracic surgery, as well as interventional and diagnostic cardiovascular procedures. The majority of the clinical training involves the care of patients in the operating theatre, including hybrid operating rooms, at decentralised anaesthesia workstations and in the intensive care unit.
The modular fellowship in cardioanaesthesia and intensive care medicine includes a one-year module in intensive care medicine and a one-year module in cardioanaesthesia. The aims are, in addition to imparting specialist expertise in cardioanaesthesiology and/or intensive care medicine, to acquire in-depth expertise in transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, among other things. The DHZC Department of Cardiac Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine offers this two-year fellowship for specialist

Fellowship in Advanced Cardi Anaesthesia

Cardioanaesthesiology and intensive care medicine is dedicated to the pre-, intra- and postoperative care of patients undergoing cardiac, vascular and intrathoracic surgery, as well as interventional and diagnostic cardiovascular procedures. The majority of the clinical training involves the care of patients in the operating theatre, including hybrid operating rooms, at decentralised anaesthesia workstations and in the intensive care unit.
The Department of Cardiac Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine offers colleagues the opportunity to 
fellowship to acquire the skills, knowledge and routine to be able to independently and autonomously provide anaesthesiological and intensive care services to patients in the subspecialisations of cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery. The DHZC Department of Cardiac Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine offers this two-year fellowship for specialist physicians.

Fellowship Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS)

For years, mechanical circulatory support (MCS) systems have been an established part of the treatment of severe heart failure. At the Department of Cardiac Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine and the Department of Cardiology, Angiology and Intensive Care Medicine at Campus Benjamin Franklin, more than 350 patients with acute decompensated heart failure due to a wide range of causes are treated with all modalities of mechanical circulatory support every year.
The two-year fellowship offers medical specialists the opportunity to specialise in the field of MCS. The fellowship provides you with the opportunity to acquire the skills, theoretical knowledge and practical handling of MCS therapy through a structured training programme, enabling you to independently and autonomously provide intensive care to patients with short- and long-term support systems.

Further training in anaesthesia and intensive care

Anaesthesia and intensive care plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of patients. The tasks involved are very demanding: they not only include the care and treatment of acutely ill patients, but also require empathetic and sensitive communication, the monitoring of important vital parameters and the supervision of life-sustaining measures.
The further training course ‘Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine’ for specialist nursing staff imparts specialist knowledge and promotes social skills. It takes place alongside work and extends over a period of 24 to a maximum of 36 months.

Further training in paediatric intensive care

In paediatrics, even the smallest premature and seriously ill children today have a chance of survival and a high quality of life in the future. This is only possible through modern therapy and care concepts as well as close cooperation within interdisciplinary teams.
The ‘Paediatric Intensive Care’ further training course for specialist nursing staff offers a practical learning environment, case-based learning and practice-related training situations. It is designed for people in employment and extends over a period of 24 to a maximum of 36 months.

Guest visits

For medical specialists, we offer internships in our clinics where they can get to know the work processes and gain practical experience. An internship at the Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité lasts up to three months and is unpaid.
We also offer colleagues in functional service management or nursing the opportunity to complete an internship or work experience at the DHZC.

Are you looking to complete a clinical traineeship or your ‘internal’ or surgical final year in one of Germany's leading cardiology centres? Then you've come to the right place – and welcome!

Applications for clinical traineeships at the DHZC can be submitted at any time. Our final year places are allocated via the portal www.pj-portal.de.

CMR Academy

The cmr-academy.com was founded in 2001 as a subsidiary of the former German Heart Institute Berlin to train physicians in the field of cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMR). Since then, more than 1,000 participants from all over the world have successfully completed the courses. The CMR Academy's modular course system offers both beginners and advanced learners the opportunity for structured further training in CMR. Our courses are conducted by specialist physicians from our clinic as well as by guest physicians from renowned clinics. The courses are aimed at radiologists, cardiologists and nuclear medicine specialists from all over the world.

The DHZB Academy is our strategic partner for training, continuing education and professional development at the DHZC. Originating from the German Heart Institute Berlin, the DHZB Academy combines modern training, continuing education and professional development programmes for medical and nursing staff. At the same time, experts from the DHZC teach in the DHZB Academy's programmes, thus ensuring a high degree of practical relevance and topicality.

As an academy for cardiovascular medicine and health professions, the DHZB Academy offers innovative, interprofessional training in cardiac medicine and nursing to ensure outstanding care for patients in the future.
