Doctor on duty at the DHZC
The Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité (DHZC) was established in 2023 through the merger of the cardiology departments of the German Heart Institute Berlin and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. The DHZC comprises seven clinics and institutes, spread across the Charité Mitte campus, the Virchow-Klinikum campus and the Benjamin Franklin campus. With 473 beds, around 2,100 employees and more than 10,000 inpatients a year, we are one of the largest heart centres in Europe.
Around 400 doctors work at the DHZC, either as specialists or in further training in the fields of heart surgery, vascular surgery, internal medicine, cardiology, anaesthesiology or general medicine. In addition, specialists at the DHZC can acquire the additional designation or specialist focus in the areas of intensive care and transplant medicine as well as paediatric heart surgery and paediatric cardiology, and the additional designation for the treatment of adults with congenital heart defects (ACHD).
As part of Europe's largest university hospital, we work closely with highly qualified specialists from all medical fields. The Charité offers doctors at every stage of their training excellent opportunities for research.
International leader
The DHZC runs the largest programmes for mechanical circulatory support (‘artificial hearts’) and for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVI). We are one of the leading international centres for rhythmology, minimally invasive cardiovascular surgery and the treatment of congenital heart defects. In addition, the DHZC is one of the leading centres in Germany for heart and lung transplantation.

Fields of application
The Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité has four cardiology outpatient clinics, an outpatient clinic for congenital heart defects, paediatric cardiology and a cardiac surgery outpatient clinic. All of these outpatient clinics offer special consultations for all cardiovascular diseases. The opportunities for doctors to further their education in their field and area of specialisation are correspondingly diverse.
As one of the largest heart centres in Europe, we have all the modern functional diagnostic facilities, such as echocardiography, spiroergometry and long-term examinations. It is possible to read all implantable cardiovascular sensors and devices at all locations; telemedicine is one of the growth areas of the DHZC. Since we regularly treat highly complex and rare heart diseases and malformations, you can gain valuable experience here in a short period of time.
The Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité has 13 cardiac catheterisation laboratories at its three locations. We offer our patients the full range of state-of-the-art cardiac catheterisation diagnostics and therapy, in particular for the treatment of coronary heart disease, heart valve disease and cardiac arrhythmias.

Under the direction of Professor Dr. Gerhard Hindricks, we operate one of the largest rhythmology programmes in Germany at the Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité, using the latest available systems and intensive research.
More about Rhythmology
At Charité, we have the latest generation of pacemaker and ICD systems. In addition, we run a special programme for the best possible removal of pacemakers or defibrillators, managed by a multidisciplinary team of surgeons and cardiologists.
The cardiac intensive care units at the Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité stand for the highest standards of intensive care with a maximum range of supportive therapies, including ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) and long-term mechanical circulatory assistance. The daily work in these wards requires a high degree of concentration and versatility. A careful induction is therefore important. In our intensive care units, doctors in training learn about the full range of cardiovascular intensive care technology.
The US magazine Newsweek has named the heart surgery department at the Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité the best heart surgery clinic in Europe. As one of the largest specialist departments in Europe, we offer all forms of heart surgery here, with a focus on the minimally invasive correction of heart valve diseases. The Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité also runs the world's largest artificial heart programme and is one of Germany's leading centres for heart and lung transplants. Our team for congenital heart defects and paediatric heart surgery treats patients from infancy to adulthood from all over Europe, often with complex congenital heart defects.
Cardioanaesthesiology is provided in nine operating theatres – including three hybrid operating theatres – to patients requiring the full range of cardiothoracic and vascular surgery and interventional cardiology. Patients receive peri-interventional care in the Peri Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), which has six intensive care treatment stations. Particular emphasis is placed on implementing fast-track and ERACS (Enhanced Recovery after Cardiac Surgery) protocols to reduce post-respiratory time after cardiac surgery.
Our general wards care for patients who require inpatient follow-up care after cardiological, cardiac surgery or vascular surgery. Here, doctors work closely with nurses and therapists to ensure comprehensive care. The focus is on postoperative care and stabilising patients before they are either discharged home or transferred to a rehabilitation clinic. On the general wards of the DHZC, doctors have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of general cardiovascular medicine while maintaining close patient contact. They play a crucial role in follow-up care and in transition management, which is particularly important for a patient's successful recovery. These wards are fully equipped with monitoring systems.
The DHZC is not only a world-class clinical centre, but also a place of intensive research. Our research teams are at the forefront of cardiovascular research, developing new therapies and technologies that are revolutionising the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. At the DHZC, physicians have the opportunity to work in interdisciplinary research teams that range from basic research to clinical application. The close collaboration with scientists from various disciplines makes it possible to develop innovative solutions to complex medical challenges. In addition, we offer extensive support for physician-scientists, including access to state-of-the-art laboratories, research grants, and the opportunity to initiate and lead their own research projects. The results of our research are directly incorporated into clinical practice, benefitting our patients and ensuring the high quality of care at DHZC.
Physician Assistants at the DHZC
Physician assistants (PAs) are integral members of the medical teams at DHZC. They are deployed, for example, in the cardiac surgery operating theatre and on various general care wards. Their work complements and relieves the doctors.
